The 1550 class is a MLW MX-620 with an axleload of only 15.1 tons! The CP rosters twenty 2000 HP units which are all based at Entroncamento. 1561 was wrecked in a terrible accident on the Sines branch on May 14th, 2003.
After the sectorization of the CP Motive Power, the "Canadians"
moved mostly off the Beira Beixa line (Abrantes - Guarda), where they
worked freight, regional and Interregional trains. The InterCity pair
between Lisboa Sta. Apolonia and Figueira da Foz is now a 1400 class duty!
Now the 1550 class belongs to the freight pool and works nearly all over
the CP system. After some years pause they see also work in the Alentejo
again. No scheduled passenger workings anymore. Occasional substitution
for disabled class 1931s with Interregional trains may still occur.
