Portugal ALCo/MLW report as of July/August '99 by Darren Walker Class 1321s - All non active, during my two week visit I only saw 1322 (back from the Douro Valley) now stored at the rear of Barreiro depot and 1325 stored in road 14 of the roundhouse. Class 1501/1521s - During my visit there were only four left in traffic these being the stunning Silver/Green 1501 and Orange 1505/10/24.Green/Silver, 1525 has been taken out of traffic as was residing inside the running shed at Barreiro off of its bogies during some translation difficulties it appeared that it had sufferd a major traction motor failure, but and this is only 'but' appeared to be under repair....watch this space!! With the unfortunate 'temporary' loss of 1525, CP have had to reinstate 1505 to service to cover the diagrams after being out of service for a few months. Inside the works compound at Barreiro 1508, 1521 and 1522 reside - all out of traffic, 1508 and 22 look to be in good condition apart from a few missing components but 1522 is heavily canabalised and stands even on accomodation bogies. 1502 and 1507 are now out of traffic and are now dumped next to the mainline behind Barreiro's roundhouse, while 1511 is dumped on road 7 of the roundhouse. All look extremely faded (the orange is beginning to go pinkish!!). The one missing ALCO was 1512 - it was knowhere to be seen! Diagrams - The class are booked power on the following trains: 23:54 Barreiro - Vila Real SA 12:45 Vila Real SA - Faro 17:42 Faro - Vila Real SA. 21:43 Vila Real SA - Barreiro The class also put in irregular appearences on the following: 08:35 Barreiro - Vila Real SA 16:20 Vila Real SA - Barreiro 20:05 Barreiro - Beja 07:50 Beja - Barreiro The class now put in frequent appearences on many of the Barreiro - Setubal/Praias-Sado suburban trains some of which are mentioned below. One sad thing to note is that the builders plates are slowly beginning to go missing from the locomotives - you always get a few spoiling it for the majority. 1551s - There are sixteen diagrams for the twenty strong fleet (although no passenger work exists) which are now appearing more fequently around the Southern Region. Out of the sixeteen diagrams daily 9 locomotives are booked to work south of the River Tagus, and their workings include several double headders mainly on coal trains to Sines from Entroncamento. They also are booked to work the wood trains from Beja to Santa Clara-Saboia (South of Funchiera!), the Barreiro to Entroncamento and return freight, the Entroncamento to Penalva and return steel, and a few other local freights in and around Beja (mostly at night). 22/07/99 1501 - 08:35 Barreiro - VRSA then 16:20 VRSA - Barreiro 1510 - 21:43 VRSA - Barreiro 1505 - 23:53 Barreiro - VRSA 23/07/99 1524 - 08:35 Barreiro - VRSA then 16:20 VRSA - Barreiro 1505 - 21:43 VRSA - Barreiro (1422 attached at Tunes DIT +load 8) 25/07/99 1510 - 08:35 Barreiro - VRSA then 16:20 VRSA - Barreiro 1524 - 23:53 Barreiro - VRSA 26/07/99 1524 - 12:45 VRSA - Faro 1937 failed on the 16:20 VRSA - Barreiro in the Faro area this meant 1524 being reassigned off of the 17:42 to VRSA from Faro to haul dead 1937 and the rake to Barreiro. 1501 - 23:53 Barreiro - VRSA 27/07/99 1501 - 21:43 VRSA - Barreiro (1418 attached at Tunes DIT+load 9) 29/07/99 1501 - 08:35 Barreiro - VRSA then 16:20 VRSA - Barreiro 1505 - 21:43 VRSA - Barreiro (1422 attached at Tunes DIT+load 8) 1524 - 23:53 Barreiro - VRSA 30/07/99 1501 - 05:55 Barreiro - Setubal 1510 - 06:18 Barreiro - Praias-Sado 1501 - 07:10 Setubal - Barreiro 1510 - 07:35 Praias-Sado - Barreiro 1501 - 08:45 Barreiro - Setubal 1501 - 10:00 Setubal - Barreiro 1505 - 13:00 Barreiro - Praias-Sado 1505 - 14:50 Praias-Sado - Barreiro 1510 - 18:20 Barreiro - Praias-Sado 1510 - 19:40 Praias-Sado - Barreiro 1501 - 19:40 Barreiro - Setubal 1501 - 21:30 Setubal - Barreiro 1524 - 21:42 VRSA - Barreiro 1551 - 12:45 Penalva - Pinhal Novo (empty steel wagons) 1563 - Mixed freight towards Barreiro, pass Pinhal Novo at 13:10 1554 - Test Run from Barreiro Works to Pinhal Novo (fresh from overhaul) 1551 - Luzianes 22:30 (on the Santa Clara-Saboia wood train) 1322 (at the back of the depot O/S), 1325 (in road 14 of the roundhouse O/S) 1502+1507 (at the back of the roundhouse next to the mainline in a poor external condition both look out of service). 1511 (dumped in road 7 of the roundhouse in the same condition as the above) Barreiro Running Shed 1525 - O/S with traction motor problems, one bogie has had the traction motor removed and looks like it is under repair - we shall see. 1508+1521+1522 - Stored at the back of the works, 1521 has no bogies 31/07/99 1501 - 23:53 Barreiro - VRSA 01/08/99 1501 - 12:45 VRSA - Faro 1501 - 17:42 Faro - VRSA 1510 - 20:05 Barreiro - Beja 1501 - 21:43 VRSA - Barreiro (1421 attached at Tunes DIT+load 8) 1505 - 23:54 Barreiro - VRSA (1427 DIT Barreiro - Tunes) 02/08/99 1510 - 07:50 Beja - Barreiro 1524 - 05:55 Barreiro - Setubal 1524 - 07:10 Setubal - Barreiro 1524 - 08:45 Barreiro - Setubal 1524 - 10:00 Setubal - Barreiro 1510 - 23:53 Barreiro - VRSA 1556 - 12:45 Penalva - Pinhal Novo (empty steel carriers) 1556 - 12:25 Barreiro - Pinhal Novo (light engine) 03/08/99 1510 - 12:45 VRSA - Faro 1510 - 17:42 Faro - VRSA 1510 - 21:43 VRSA - Barreiro (1422 attached at Tunes DIT+load 8) 1501 - 23:53 Barreiro - VRSA 04/08/99 1501 - 21:43 VRSA - Barreiro
